September in Lapland is the ruska season — the brief, intense period when birch forests turn gold and the fells go amber and red. The light is low, the air is cold and clear, and the land is almost entirely empty of people. This is the most honest version of Lapland there is.

We walk the route in reverse — from Saltoluokta to Kvikkjokk — finishing at our home base where the dogs are. Six days on trail, sleeping in tents, cooking together in the evening. The group is small by design. Maximum six people. Enough to share the work, not so many that the silence disappears.

The dogs are present at camp from the beginning and join us on the final section into Kvikkjokk. They are not the programme. They are part of the life of the place.

Saltoluokta Sitojaure Aktse Skierffe Parte Kvikkjokk

The route follows sections of the Kungsleden southward through the Rapadalen — one of the most expansive wilderness valleys in Scandinavia. Lake crossings by boat. One day dedicated to the ascent of Skierffe, the cliff that looks down over the entire delta. The final night in Kvikkjokk before Sunday departure.

Good fit

People with hiking experience who want a genuine small-group wilderness trip. Those drawn to the silence and scale of Arctic autumn. Anyone curious about life with working dogs in their natural context.

Not a good fit

Complete beginners to hiking or overnight camping. Those who need fixed comfort or predictable conditions. If you want a first wilderness experience, the summer hike is a better starting point.
